The Village: Educational Opportunity Center

The Educational Opportunity Center has been a tremendous asset in helping our member moms apply for scholarships for college as well as providing one-on-one assistance with applying for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), completing College Applications (1 yr. certifications, 2 yr. colleges, 4 yr. college/universities), navigating the college admissions process, helping with Tennessee Reconnect Scholarship & Tennessee Promise Scholarships, and providing free study resources and testing information for the HiSET/GED.

While their main location for Hamilton County is on the UTC campus, the EOC team can help students at Chattanooga State as well as some other not-for-profit colleges. They serve students with various unique needs, with preference given to those who are low-income, first generation (neither parent graduated from college with a four-year degree) and are interested in attending college.

In consideration of COVID restrictions, the EOC team has been working remotely, but they are still helping students. Online forms have been set up to assist clientele with certification program and/or college major exploration and career interest exploration. They are also still assisting people over the phone with completing the FAFSA.

They currently are accepting applications remotely for a scholarship at the link below. The UTC scholarship(s) applicants need to complete by 11:59 pm Sun. June 14, 2020. Applicants for future general scholarship consideration not attending UTC can apply until Friday August 21, 2020

We appreciate the team at the EOC, especially Dr. Keith Bridges, Director, and former, retired director Cynthia Long. It takes a village and we’re so grateful for the work that you do to help students succeed–especially our Scholar Mamas.

The goal of the EOC program is to increase the number of adult participants who enroll in postsecondary education institutions. You can access their website at: https://www.utc.edu/center-community-career-education/educational-opportunity-center/index.php to find out more and to see the other locations serving TN residents. The Educational Opportunity Center is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
